THE WINTER ITCH

HAS ANYONE OUT THERE IN PETLAND NOTICED THERE PET'S COAT DRYING OUT, GETTING MORE FLAKY, OR THEY STARTED ITCHING A LOT MORE THAN NORMAL. HOW ABOUT YOUR OWNSELF? SCALP ITCHY OR SKIN DRY AND SCRATCHY THESE DAYS OF WINTER? THIS TIME OF YEAR, THINGS BEGIN THERE SEASONAL DRYING OUT AMD THE COLD SEEMS TO TAKE THE VERY INTEGRITY OUT OF OUR WONDERFUL WRAPPING WE CALL SKIN. THIS MORNING, A CLIENT BROUGHT IN HER LITTLE CUTIE DOG WHO HAD BEEN SCRATCING AND RUBBING SO HARD IT WAS DRAWING BLOOD FROM IT'S SKIN. I PEERED BACK AT THE PAST HISTORY AND NOTICED DOMINO HAD FIRST BEGUN THIS ITCHING BACK IN LATE NOVEMBER. USUALLY, IT IS ASSUMED AFTER THE FIRST SERIOUS FROSTS COME, THE POLLENS AND MOLDS THAT CAUSE SEASONAL ALLERGIES IN PETS DROP AND MOST IF NOT ALL GET BETTER AND STOP ITCHING. BUT, WE HAVE SEEN A FEW CASES WEEKLY OF ITCHY SKIN DOGS THAT ARE TROUBLING THEIR OWNERS, EVEN KEEPING THEM UP AT NIGHT THUMPING ON THE FLOOR AS THEY PURSUE THEIR PRURITIC OR ITCHY DRY COATS. WHEN THE COAT AND SKIN BECOME DRY,WE CAN HELP OUR COMPANIONS WITH VARIOUS AIDES TO RESTORE THE SYSTEM. FIRST, GET THEM ON OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS, OR FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS DAILY. USE A ANIMAL SPECIFIC STRENGTH AS THESE VITAMINS A,D,E AND EPA/DHA ARE FAT SOLUBLE AND NOT LIKE THE WATER SOLUBLE VITAMINS C AND B COMPLEX THAT SLIP OUT OF THE BODY IF IN HIGH CONCENTRATIONS, STAY IN THE BODY. TOO HIGH A CONCENTRATION AND TOXIC LEVELS COULD BE REACHED IF ONE USES HUMAN LEVELS. THE FISH OIL WILL BRING THE LUSTER BACK IN THE SKIN AND COAT AND AIDE IN THE REPAIRING OF DAMAGED SKIN. OATMEAL SHAMPOOS AND RINSES SHOULD BE USED ONCE A WEEK TOO. TO CURB THE ITCHING A VISIT TO YOUR VETERINARIAN MAY BE IN ORDER, ESPECIALLY IF THE PET IS TEARING INTO THEIR SKIN AND CAUSING INFECTION. ANTIINFLAMATORIES AND ANTIBIOTICS MAY BE NECESSARY. A NEW DRUG, APOQUEL IS OUT NOW THAT CAN ALSO BE USED TO CONTROL ITCHING. APOQUEL IS PRETTY MUCH SIDE AFFECT FREE AS APPOSED TO CORTISONE COMPOUNDS. BUT, ONLY 70 PERCENT OF THE DOG POPULATION RESPOND TO APOQUEL. IT'S A GREAT DRUG WITH A GREAT PURPOSE BUT FOR THOSE IT DOES NOT HELP WE HAVE ALTERNATIVE THERAPY. ANTIHISTAMINES ARE HELPFUL BUT HAVE TO BE USED AT HIGH LEVELS AND FREQUENTLY. AFTER DIAMOND AND HER OWNER LEFT, I THOUGHT LONG AND HARD WHAT MIGHT ALSO BE HER PROBLEM. LIVING IN THE COUNTRY, HER MASTER BURNS FIREWOOD FOR HEAT. I WONDER IF THIS MIGHT BE A PROBLEM OR INCREASE THE RELATIVE DRYNESS OF THE HOME. START RUNNING HUMIDIFIERS ALSO IN STRATEGIC ROOMS IN HOUR HOME TO HELP COMBAT THE WINTER ITCH. HOPE THIS BLOG GIVES YOU A FEW IDEAS ON HOW TO KEEP YOUR PET MORE COMFORTABLE WHILE WE ALL WAIT FOR THE HOPE OF SPRINGTIME. SEE YOU SOON AND STOP BY AND SEE US SOME TIME. WE WONT BITE.....
